Conference Wide McDaniel, James [1], Pretz, Chelsea [2]. The Elevator Speech: Crafting an Effective Pitch that Highlights your Research and Illustrates the Broader Impacts (A Workshop for Students and PostDocs). Learning to summarize, simplify, and clearly communicate one’s research among an ever-growing network of colleagues and the general public is critical to a scientist’s success. Over the past few years, the “elevator speech” has become increasingly important in the field of science because it is imperative (more so… now, than ever) that we are able to effectively communicate our research to the outside world in a concise manner. Whether we share our work with colleagues, at job interviews, or even family members, crafting an effective elevator speech requires us to think beyond our discipline in order to address the broader impacts associated with our research projects. The goal of this workshop is to bring together scientists who are at different stages in their career (ranging from students to post-doctoral fellows) to hone an elevator speech that they have already prepared. We will have a keynote speaker (TBA) who will provide helpful tips on crafting an effective elevator speech followed by a breakout session to allow attendees the opportunity to revise and modify their elevator speeches. Finally, we will organize into groups as a means of sharing our elevator speeches with one another in a friendly, low-risk environment. Ultimately, the social atmosphere of this event will contribute to opportunities for candid, constructive feedback, and we encourage participants to utilize this interaction as practice toward pitching your elevator speech throughout the rest of your time at BOTANY 2018.
