Trail Blazing Women as botanical artists in the 19th and 20th century Jess, Robin [1]. Anne Ophelia Todd Dowden: Botanical Artist and Author. Anne Ophelia Todd Dowden (1907 - 2007) was a botanical artist and author. This simple statement belies the extent of her influence as a popular illustrator and as a conveyor of botanical knowledge to the general public. Anne wrote, illustrated and designed nine books and five magazine articles on plant themes including the eye-opening Wild Green Things in the City: A Book of Weeds and books authored by others such as Plants of Christmas by H. Borland (1969). Anne Ophelia's artwork introduced many readers to the intricacies of plant structure and function through articles in well-read magazines such as Life and House Beautiful. Charmed by her beautiful paintings and clear, straightforward writing, those garden and plant enthusiasts learned about botany and natural relationships. This overview of her work and life, featuring Anne Ophelia's illustrations, will pay homage to an innovator in connecting people to plants through art.
