Separating Sequenced Grindelia.

Grindelia, or gumweed, is a genus in the Asteraceae family that is native to the Americas. In the south-western and south-central United States, three species lack ray flowers. Although the three species have very different positions in the phylogeny of the group, the morphological characteristics that separate them are unclear, and two of the species, G. aphanactis and G. nuda, are often combined. The goal of this research is to use sequence data from the internal transcribing spacer (ITS) and external transcribing spacer (ETS) regions of the nuclear ribosomal DNA to identify a set of voucher specimens collected from throughout the range of the three species. We will then use morphological and distribution data from these voucher specimens to determine which characteristics can be used to separate the species in the absence of sequence data.
