Phenotypic variation and genetic control of long-term success in a near century long study of barley (Hordeum vulgare).

With a changing climate and ever increasing global population, being able to predict successful genotypes in an agricultural setting is becoming increasingly important. Understanding the genetic basis of crop performance over many years is imperative, but long-term studies translating genotype to phenotype are exceedingly rare. One such system, the composite cross II (CCII) of barley (Hordeum vulgare) is a near century long agricultural genetics experiment which allows us to explore the genetic basis of crop performance. The CCII was imitated in 1927 from 28 lines of cultivated barely from around the world and grown at UC Davis on a semi-yearly basis spanning 60 generations with no artificial selection. By utilizing a randomized greenhouse experiment of 4 timepoints spanning 40 generations, we were able to characterize phenotypic change of many agronomically important traits such as plant height, flowering time, and total yield. With genotype ascertainment using RADSeq, we were able to link changes in observed phenotype to specific changes in the genome, in some cases to down to individual genes. Using obtained genotypes, we are also able to identify signatures of selection and determine if particular parental genotypes were favored in the California climate. These results provide an estimate into the speed and extent evolution is acting on this composite cross population.
